Co-operatives are organizations where people join together to meet their needs through joint-ownership and democratic control. There are lots of different types of co-ops: in Alberta we have Co-op gas stations and grocery stores, there are credit unions, co-operative utility providers and, of course, housing co-ops.
What ties all these different types of co-operatives together is that they are owned and controlled by the people who use their services. If you are a member of a co-op or credit union, you own a share of the organization and have a say in what that organization does.
We all need a place to live. In our co-op every housemate becomes a member and part-owner of our houses. Rather than pay rent, you pay a monthly housing charge that covers the cost of taxes, maintenance, insurance... no profit going to a landlord!
This shared ownership model means that we get to make decisions about our homes with our housemates and fellow co-op members in a democratic way. It gives use more control- we can paint, renovate, and decorate- but it also has more responsibility because we have to make those things happen ourselves!
You are your own landlord- you get to make decisions about your space!
